I possenti faraglioni, secondo Omero, sarebbero i massi lanciati da Polifemo contro le navi di Ulisse in fuga dopo aver accecato il Ciclope.  Successivamente subirono il fascino di questa zona anche Verga e Visconti, rispettivamente con "I malavoglia" e con "La terra trema". A tempi più recenti risale la valorizzazione delle acque antistanti Acitrezza, tanto  da istituire un'Area Marina Protetta a protezione di un ecosistema ricchissimo ..........
